Jenny's Approach to Therapy
My approach to therapy is a holistic one. I believe a person's well being encompasses all parts of the person. Mind, body and spirit are connected. I believe that when one aspect is out of balance, it will affect the person as a whole. While I do believe in setting specific goals and focusing on treatment of presenting issues, I also like to keep the whole picture in mind. My strategies are eclectic. I have a variety of modalities to draw upon including but not limited to: cognitive behavioral therapy techniques, relaxation techniques, dance/movement therapy, other creative arts therapy techniques, journaling, psycho-education, and various forms of talk therapy (Inner Family Systems informed, Person Centered, Compassionate Inquiry, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy). Therapy can be a subtle process that takes time. Sometimes things can seem worse before they get better. Working through feelings or thoughts can be challenging and can cause changes in relationships. This professional relationship between you and I is a shared responsibility and a co-creative process. I invite you to take an active role. I will accompany you through your journey and I am honored to do so. Along the way, I will help you become more self-aware and develop self-reliance. Together, we will find what works for you.
A DMT session can look like a lot of different things. I like to think of it as a spectrum. Sometimes I am observing the client's body to gain more information and call attention to it to increase the client's self-awareness. Sometimes movement is used to build trust and a working alliance. Sometimes people explore aches and pains in the body to find an emotional root cause. Other times, people are dancing their stories with me as their witness. Dance/movement therapy sessions can be anything in between and sessions are unique to each person. Before we learn how to talk, we communicate with our bodies, and that doesn't change.
